While you’re planning a trip away from home, it is likely that you look forward to experiencing the different foods that the country has to offer. However, there are some foods that are usually best to avoid when visiting abroad. Here are five foods to steer clear of while traveling overseas.

Fresh Vegetables 

Some countries don’t always conduct the same quality control as others do. Consuming raw vegetables while abroad can increase the risk of getting E. coli and other health problems. If you decide to eat raw vegetables, make sure you buy them in packages that haven’t been exposed to water.

Bananas

Although bananas are generally protected by their peels, you should still be careful when eating bananas when traveling abroad. Even with the extra protection, bananas can still become infested with parasites that are more common in other countries. If you combine bananas with leaky gut, you are likely to experience additional gastrointestinal problems, which will detract from the fun of your trip.

Street Food

Street food is typically sold from vendors carts or kiosks along the streets of cities, towns, and villages around the world.

 It may be tempting to try some street food so that you can taste some local cuisine while saving money on dining out at a restaurant, but you should really think carefully about it.

You’ll get sick or other health problems from eating street food if some of these vendors don’t practice proper hygiene and food handling methods. If you continue to want to eat street food, look for a cart or kiosk that appears well-kempt.

Dairy Products that have not been pasteurized

Some unpasteurized products contain E. coli, listeria and salmonella among other potential contaminants. Unpasteurized dairy products are particularly problematic for pregnant women and people with weak immune systems.

Spicy Foods

While spicy foods aren’t always dangerous, eating them on a global adventure can produce gastrointestinal discomfort that may create an embarrassing situation. Some foreign cuisines contain spices that you aren’t used to and can’t handle properly. When eating spicy foods, the consequences can cause severe indigestion and result in sleeping difficulties. It is recommended to bring along lots of antacids and digestive health medicines.

Tap Water

Even though water is viewed as a beverage rather than a food, it is still wise to avoid drinking it while out of the country. This is especially true in developing countries where the water may be contaminated with harmful germs and bacteria which may pose serious health risks. The safest thing to do when traveling abroad is to buy drinking water. It is also best to avoid using ice that has been made with water.

Sauces and condiments

A number of condiments and sauces aren’t always prepared and handled in a safe way in some countries. They may be allowed to sit out longer and spoil due to lax food safety regulations in some parts of the world. Some sauces and condiments could have also been made with unhealthful water which is prevalent within the region.

You will probably save yourself a visit to an ER if you steer clear of certain foods: you could possibly even enjoy your trip more if you know which foods to avoid when traveling abroad.
